Why Devon Was In Jail In Sirens’ Opening Sequence

Warning! Spoilers for Sirens ahead!

The first time we see Devon DeWitt (Meghann Fahy) in Sirens, she is being released from jail. As with a number of things in this Netflix series, it’s not initially clear why. However, as the story proceeds, the details are gradually revealed. As we learn more about Devon, information about Simone (Milly Alcock), Michaela (Julianne Moore), and Peter (Kevin Bacon) is brought to the surface is well. Said and done, the full picture is unveiled, and it’s evident in Sirens that Devon’s jail time has everything to do with why she wants her sister to come back to Buffalo, New York.

Sirens follows Devon as she sets out to an affluent island to find her sister, Simone, who had all but cut off contact with her family after becoming millionaire philanthropist Michaela Kell’s personal assistant. Once Devon finally tracked down Simone, she became concerned that Michaela was leading a bizarre sort of cult, and that Simone had fallen hopelessly under the woman’s influence. Of course, Devon’s own life in Sirens wasn’t the perfect example for Simone. The older sister was desperate for the younger’s help because her poor decision-making was getting in the way of caring for their father.

Devon Was Arrested For A DUI & Resisting Arrest Before Sirens Episode 1

This Is Part Of Why Devon Needed Simone

Devon in town in Sirens

It’s eventually revealed in Sirens that Devon had been arrested for driving under the influence just before the start of episode 1. She had also become violent with a police officer, throwing a can at him in order to resist arrest. When Michaela had Devon arrested for trespassing, she discovered that the recent DUI arrest was Devon’s second in a short amount of time. This meant that she was at significant risk of having to serve a hard sentence, likely pending a criminal trial. This explains why, after months of trying to get a hold of Simone, Devon became so desperate to bring her home.

Sirens Review: I Wish Meghann Fahy & Milly Alcock’s Well-Acted Netflix Drama Had Stuck To Its Dark Comedy

Netflix’s soapy new drama, Sirens, occasionally intrigues with its story, but it’s the cast who really make this show a real treat to watch.

Devon knew that if she had to go to prison for an extended period, there would be no one left to take care of her father. Bruce DeWitt was in the early stages of dementia, and though he could still function day-to-day, he was becoming increasingly confused. Devon hoped that Simone would leave behind her job with Michaela to come help with Bruce, just in case she wound up unable to do so because of her poor choices.

Will Devon Still Have To Serve Jail Time After Sirens’ Ending?

Court Is Likely In Devon’s Future

The ending of Sirens sees Devon realize that she needs to leave Simone to her choices. The younger sister usurped Michaela’s position as Mrs. Kell and will likely face endless consequences as a result. Though this was hard for Devon to accept, she made the healthier choice of walking away. She told Michaela that she would return to Buffalo with her father, and, using the $10,000 check, get herself set up with a place outside Bruce’s home—some healthy space from the man. Devon’s potential jail time for her two DUIs wasn’t mentioned, but it surely didn’t go away.

What Really Happened To Peter’s First Wife, Jocelyn, In Sirens

Devon hears about some rumors regarding Peter’s wife in Sirens, and though she is initially suspicious, the full truth is eventually revealed.

More than likely, Devon will have to go to court, and a judge will decide her fate. It’s perfectly possible that she will be sent to jail, but, given her status as Bruce’s primary caregiver, the judge may take it easy on Devon. However, if she does have to serve jail time, Sirens already established some options for Bruce. Devon’s check from the Kells could be helpful, and the man can receive services from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs until his daughter is free and back on her feet.

Whether Devon goes to jail or gets a slap on the wrist, one thing is sure after Sirens’ ending—she won’t ask Simone for help.

Whether Devon goes to jail or gets a slap on the wrist, one thing is sure after Sirens‘ ending—she won’t ask Simone for help. Cashing Michaela’s check is one thing, but Devon won’t allow herself to benefit from Simone’s position as Peter’s wife. Perhaps, one day, long after the events of Sirens, Simone will face a similar fate as Michaela and have to make her way back out into the world and start fresh. By then, Devon will surely be thriving.
