“I want to prove to the world that they’re not monsters… 🦈 I’m good to go anytime – I want to push the limits.” Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Shark Whisperer, arriving for everyone to watch at the end of June streaming on Netflix worldwide. This seems to be a very intriguing look at a social media star who claims to be a conservationist living in Hawaii – a shark lover named Ocean Ramsey. From the Academy Award-winning director of the famous doc My Octopus Teacher comes Shark Whisperer, a provocative & visually arresting film that dives into the murky waters of modern conservation, where science, activism, and spectacle collide. I’m glad this is critical of her and includes interviews with real scientists, because I do think they’re right about this being all for show. “This is not just a story about sharks. It’s a story about how we choose to tell stories — about nature, ourselves, and what we’re willing to risk to be heard.” Of course I think it will end up being supportive of her in the end. I’m intrigued to watch just to learn more. But I’ll also recommend the other female shark conservationist doc Playing with Sharks.
Here’s the full official trailer (+ poster) for Netflix’s doc film Shark Whisperer, direct from YouTube:
At the center of Shark Whisperer is marine conservationist & social media lightning rod Ocean Ramsey (@oceanramsey), whose viral videos of swimming freely with sharks have sparked global fascination — and fierce debate. Driven by a desire to leave the cage and decode shark language up close, Ocean strives to connect with these predators on an unprecedented level— hoping to challenge the negative perception of sharks. To her supporters / followers, she’s a fearless advocate giving a voice to misunderstood predators. To her critics, she represents a troubling trend of self-promotion disguised as environmentalism. Through intimate character study & with breathtaking underwater cinematography, the film explores the tensions between advocacy and ethics, media influence and ecological integrity. With great insight from marine biologists, indigenous knowledge holders, and fellow conservationists—both supportive and dissenting—it paints a nuanced portrait of a polarizing figure & examines the many broader questions she provokes. 🦈
Shark Whisperer is co-directed by three filmmakers: James Reed (Oscar-winning director of docs Jago: A Life Underwater, Rise of the Warrior Apes, My Octopus Teacher, and eps of “Frozen Planet II”, “Chimp Empire”), J.P. Stiles (director on the series “&Music”, “Golden: The Journey of USA’s Elite Gymnasts”) & Harrison Macks (also on “&Music”, “Golden: The Journey of USA’s Elite Gymnasts”). Made by Boardwalk Pictures Production and An Underdog Films Limited Production. It’s executive produced by Lana Barkin & Dane Lillegard. Netflix will debut the Shark Whisperer doc streaming on Netflix worldwide starting June 30th, 2025 coming soon this summer (just before Shark Week on July 20th). Anyone want to watch this?
