The perfect movie to follow up The Wild Robot is the underrated Disney movie from 2014, Big Hero 6. The Wild Robot has been dominating Netflix’s streaming charts as of late and was both a commercial and critical success upon its release in 2024. At the 97th Academy Awards, The Wild Robot earned three Oscar nominations —including Best Animated Feature— and it’s not hard to understand why the film has been so highly praised. The Wild Robot tells a moving story about a shipwrecked service robot named Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) who gradually adapts to her surroundings.
Roz eventually forms close connections to the local wildlife and finds herself taking on a maternal role when she raises an orphaned gosling she names Brightbill (Kit Connor). The Wild Robot is just one of the many animated movies that feature robot protagonists. Many of these movies have a similar setup to The Wild Robot, where the robot characters embark on a clumsy journey to fit in with others and properly adapt to their new environment. The screenplay and character writing are impressive, and the emotional weight within Big Hero 6′s narrative is well-balanced with its energetic action sequences. Big Hero 6 also contains stunning animation that effectively immerses audiences in the fictional, futuristic city of San Fransokyo. At the 87th Academy Awards, Big Hero 6 won in the Best Animated Feature category, and though it’s been widely praised, there haven’t been many updates regarding a Big Hero 6 sequel.

Following in the footsteps of other praised DreamWorks films like Shrek, Madagascar, and The Bad Guys, The Wild Robot is getting a sequel, and it’s already in development. After the critical and box-office success of a movie, it’s not uncommon for plans to expand upon the original story to be announced, but this hasn’t been the case for Big Hero 6. A few years after the movie’s premiere, Big Hero 6: The Series and Baymax! were released as a follow-up and sequel TV show based on the Disney movie.

This suggests a Big Hero 6 sequel isn’t likely to happen. Additionally, much of what fans might’ve anticipated from a Big Hero 6 sequel has already been explored in the aforementioned TV series. The lack of a Big Hero 6 sequel film is disappointing, but luckily, The Wild Robot won’t suffer the same fate.
