“Whether it’s the rot, or the heat, every one if you is going to die.” “The truth is: the West is once again Wild.” An official trailer has arrived for a movie called The Protector, a gritty action thriller set in a dusty post-apocalyptic future very similar to Mad Max. This is the feature directorial debut of Raul Gasteazoro, who has been developing this project for years, made on a low budget shot on location with everyone putting their passion into making it. With the region’s last source of freshwater buried under a Native American reservation and evil forces angling for control, a convict fighting for her own freedom becomes the unlikely protector of a young boy who may have the power to save it. Starring Marguerite Moreau as Key, a young woman who’s the only one with a map to get to a source of water. But once she learns the truth about what’s going on, she must fight for the future of the West. Also starring Graham Greene, Chris Redman, Mark Lane III, and Jade Tailor. And tons of extras and stunt people as well. Even if this is just another version of Mad Max (and Waterworld) it still looks entertaining enough to consider watching. Might turn out good.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Raul Gasteazoro’s epic film The Protector, direct from YouTube:
Ravaged by water wars, famine, and drought, the West is once again wild, and peace is but a thing of the past. Children are rare, water is scarce, and life hinges on a delicate balance. The resulting America is brutalized by brazen acts of ruthlessness. Rallying around gas-guzzling gladiators, a new and brutal form of drag racing called “Dirt-Joust” has become the sport of the people. With not much to live for but the purse at the end of the race, these drivers compete to win or die trying. The only driver to have survived a loss is Key. But she lost her freedom and her wife in the process. In order to escape a manslaughter prison sentence, she makes a deal with Gael, the leader of a brutal gang of outlaws known as the Revelers. Key’s mission is simple: A Native American reservation has the region’s last freshwater aquifer beneath it. She’s the only one with a map to avoid all of the booby traps that surround it. If she can get on, she can get free.
The Protector, a project formerly known as The WaterBearer, is written and directed by American producer / filmmaker Raul Gasteazoro, making his feature directorial debut with this film after many years of work – a few other short films and producing projects previously. It’s produced by James Cooney, Matthew Fahey, Raul Gasteazoro, Jamie Roberts, Casey Unterman, and Helix Wolfson. With music from composer Michael Sempert. This hasn’t premiered at any festivals or elsewhere, as far as we know. Gasteazoro’s The Protector film will debut in select US theaters + on VOD starting May 23rd, 2025 coming up. Who wants to watch?
