Jesse Armstrong’s Mountainhead To Release Early On HBO Max

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.

Mountainhead will be released early on HBO Max. The movie is written and directed by Jesse Armstrong, with it being his first project since the HBO hit series Succession ended in 2023. Mountainhead revolves around a group of wealthy friends meeting up in the midst of a financial crisis and the satirical comedy-drama has naturally drawn comparisons to Succession. The cast includes Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, Ramy Youssef.

As per Deadline, Mountainhead will be available to watch via HBO Max at 12:01 a.m. PT/3:01 a.m. ET on May 31. It was previously scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. ET/PT debut on HBO Max, and it will still air at this time on HBO. The surprise announcement of the early release is the latest development in a fast-moving project, with Armstrong’s first feature film being announced in January and releasing at the end of May.

What This Means For Mountainhead

Mountainhead‘s early HBO Max release is fitting for a movie that feels as though it has been fast-tracked from the start. Following the announcement in January, filming began in March and concluded in April. This is an incredibly quick turnaround for any movie, let alone one being made by HBO. There is obviously a great deal of confidence in Armstrong given what was achieved with Succession, as it is not only one of HBO’s best shows, but is widely considered to be an all-time great television series.

While not all Mountainhead reviews are positive so far, it does have a fresh 81% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. This positive reception provides another reason for Mountainhead to be released earlier than planned, as HBO is feeling confident in the final product and wants to build on the momentum. It is also an effective way to reward HBO Max subscribers by giving them early access, especially in the week after one of their biggest shows, The Last of Us, concluded its latest season.
